You know the story:

There are 3 frogs sitting on a log.

One of them says “I’m thinking about getting off this log and moving to that pond, over there, where there are more flies.”

So how many frogs are sitting on the log?

You got it – 3 because thinking about it, talking about it and wishing for it…will not make it happen.


When you think about something you want to accomplish but don’t take action toward achieving it- you keep wishing for it, thinking about it and talking about it, you’re actually creating confusion and for your brain. Here’s why:

The reticular activating system (RAS) in your brain works to help you solve problems and get what you want. However, if you keep saying…"I want to win the lottery" - but you never stop for a lottery ticket, you never go to the counter and ask for a lottery ticket, you never actually purchase a lottery ticket, but then look to see what the winning numbers are…your RAS/ Make It Happen Buddy will eventually ignore your chatter about winning the lottery. In fact, it may decide you really don’t want to win the lottery because you did not TAKE ACTION AND BUY A TICKET!

For years, I created confusion for my Make It Happen Buddy/RAS because I kept saying - I need to drink more water. But nothing changed. Earlier this year, I made a commitment to my Accountability Partner that involved me making a donation to an organization I find contemptible if I didn’t take action. Facing that consequence, I became 100% committed to taking action to create a new behavior. Now, I have a hydrate bottle that reminds me to drink water throughout the day. I keep water next to me in the office, the car and the kitchen. I find my evening walk is a great opportunity to get in another 20 ounces of water before I wind down for the day…on target with my H2O goal.
